Learning poverty, as defined by the World Bank, refers to the inability of a 10-year-old to read and understand a simple text. In low- and middle-income countries, 53% of children struggle with basic literacy, leading to high dropout rates and limited future opportunities.
The Annual Status of Education Report (ASER) 2024 highlights significant learning gaps in Karur, Tamil Nadu. While 68.8% of children aged 6-14 are enrolled in government schools, learning outcomes remain weak. Among grades III to V, only 27.4% can read a standard II-level text, and 41.1% can perform basic subtraction. For grades VI to VIII, 67.1% can read a standard II-level text, but only 30.6% can do division.
Literacy Disparities in Karur
Karur's literacy rate is 75.6%, placing it 23rd among Tamil Nadu's 32 districts. The male literacy rate stands at 84.54%, while female literacy lags at 66.86%, reflecting a significant gender gap. The rural literacy rate is 69.3%, with male literacy at 79.82% and female literacy at 59.02%, compared to urban literacy at 84.7%.
With 59.18% of Karur’s population living in rural areas, the rural-urban divide further affects learning access. Bridging these gaps requires community-driven literacy programs, increased access to educational resources, and stronger support for female education to improve foundational literacy and numeracy skills.

Imagine stepping into a village in 2025 and meeting a primary grader who struggles to read, write, or do basic subtraction.
In Kurumbapatti village, a young student reaches middle school yet finds it difficult to read a simple sentence, write clearly, or solve basic math problems. Education is a daily battle, overshadowed by household responsibilities and discouraging words that erode confidence. Many children come from broken families, financial hardships, health conditions and a community with no graduates. They grow up believing they can’t—until someone shows them they can. Karkalaam is here to change that. Through foundational literacy, creative learning, and skill-building, we empower children with the confidence to read, write, think critically, and dream beyond their circumstances. Progress is already visible—children are eager to learn, improving their skills, and showing up even on holidays. Education is their path out of poverty. With the right support today, they can build a better tomorrow.

Educational imbalance is a real challenge. Foundational literacy plays a crucial role in a child’s higher education and future skill development. The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 emphasizes the importance of Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (FLN), aiming for every child to achieve proficiency in reading, writing, and basic mathematics by the end of Grade 3.
However, in Kurumbapatti village, 84% of underprivileged children from grades 1 to 8 struggle with basic math, reading, and writing skills. Many are unable to:

- Solve simple math problems
- Read and write basic English (e.g., days of the week, months of the year)
- Write a letter in their native Tamil language
Reading Proficiency Levels:
In four levels of reading level storybooks – level 1: beginning to read, level 2: learning to read, level 3: reading independently and level 4: reading proficiency. Children are comfortable with the book,
- Grades 6-8: Tamil (Level 2: Learning to read), English (Level 1: Beginning to read)
- Grades 1-5: Tamil & English (Level 1: Beginning to read)
The biggest challenge? Even after studying, children struggle to understand and answer questions on tests in both Tamil and English. Nutritional deficiencies further impact their learning abilities. Sadly, only a few students pass higher secondary exams, and financial hardships often force many into work at a young age.
